Welcome to 3rd grade!!
Dear 3rd Grade Families,
I’d like to welcome you to third grade! We have an exciting year of learning ahead and I am looking forward to working with you and your child to make this a fantastic year of learning and discovery.
Here is some information about our school day. Please keep this letter tucked away for future reference.
AgendasThe students have an agenda that will go home each day and must be returned to school the following day. Any work not completed by the end of the day should be highlighted to show that it is homework. I will also send a daily email with each night’s homework. Please initial the book every day as an indication that you are aware of your child’s homework.
Take home folder (OWL folder)
Your child has a blue take home folder that they will take to and from school each day. One section is for papers that stay at home--notes from school, graded papers (they will be marked with a percentage, check mark, or a number between 1-5); the other is for papers, such as homework, that need to be returned to school. There is also a spot in this section for papers that students use both at home and school which stay in the folder. Please be sure to check it each day and have your child keep it in his/her backpack so it is returned to school each day.
HomeworkAny daily work not completed during the school day will be homework, which is due the next morning, unless otherwise noted in the agenda. In addition, each school night your child should read for at least 20 minutes. Basic math facts should also be practiced for a couple of minutes every day. You may use flashcards, oral quizzing, or any of the free online math facts websites and/or games. You will find some links on my website.
Snack timePlease send a nutritious snack with your child each day (no cookies, candy, chips, etc.), even if your child is buying lunch. I encourage your child to bring in a water bottle with a no spill top (no twist off tops, single use bottles, or ice-filled bottles will be allowed) to keep on their desk. Pop, flavored drinks and gum are not allowed in the classroom. Please help us keep our classroom “green” by sending snacks, lunch and water in reusable containers.
LunchStudents need to order lunch the day before in order to get a hot lunch the following day. Please take advantage of prepaying online or sending in money for several days at a time--this saves us quite a bit of time in class.
Birthdays
We love to celebrate your child’s special day. On their birthday, the student will choose a game that the whole class can enjoy together. Please do not send in food treats or treat bags. If you would like, you may donate a game/toy to the classroom. Summer birthdays will be celebrated at the end of the year.
Suggested 3rd Grade Supplies (please label with child’s name)~1 small pack colored pencils ~1 pack crayons (24 or less) ~1 pack markers (8) ~2 large erasers
~12 sharpened pencils (no mechanical pencils) ~3 red or green pens ~2 glue sticks ~Scissors
~4 thin whiteboard markers (with eraser if possible) ~1” 3 ring binder with clear view cover
~ 2 - 70 page spiral notebooks ~5 sturdy pocket folders (label with name) ~ear buds or small headphones
~ ruler ~2 small pencil pouches (not too large) ~1 box Kleenex ~3 different color highlighters
Funny paper
Please do not be alarmed if you see some odd looking papers in your child’s binder. To help reduce the amount of paper we use, I will sometimes copy worksheets on recycled paper, so if something looks strange, try flipping it over.
CommunicationFriday newsletters from the classroom will keep you informed of what we’re working on in the classroom. The newsletter will be emailed each Friday. Please take a moment to read it as I will include important information in the “notes” section. I can be reached via email (the quickest way for me to get back to you), phone, or you may send in a note with your child.
Now I have some homework for you! Please help me to know your child better by filling out the attached form. You will also find the emergency forms in your child’s folder. Please fill them out and return them as soon as possible. In addition, send me an email with the subject line “hi” so I will have your email address. If there are multiple emails that you would like homework and newsletters sent to, please let me know.
I look forward to getting to know you and your child this year! Please join me at open house on
Sept. 16 at 6:30 to learn more about 3rd grade. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
